How Jumper Came to Be
Chapter 3
The Dukes stayed up till around midnight, discussing why it was so
quiet in Hazzard, law-wise.
“I think Boss and Rosco are planning something, it’s just been, well,
peaceful for a change,” Luke told everyone. They were debating the subject.
“Well, I think the silence is nice,” Daisy said.
“I agree with Luke, Daisy, I think it’s just the calm before the storm.”
“Bo, I’m siding with Daisy on this one; you boys worry too much,”
Uncle Jesse spoke to them in a kind, understanding tone, but he wished they
would just pipe down and relax for a change. They needed to enjoy the peace for
once, but being who they were, they couldn’t. They knew something was gonna
happen in Hazzard. “Now, I want all of you young ‘uns to go off to bed,” Jesse
finished as they went off their rooms. He himself followed when their lights
had all gone out.
The following day Rosco and Boss were in Boss’s office discussing their
newest scheme: sheep stealing.
“Rosco, this is the best scheme I have ever had. Do you know how
much I can get for those sheep from a sheep farmer? Or even better, I could hide
them and sell their fleeces. Do you know how much I can make doing that?”
“Are you kidding, of course I do, you can make, uh, I don’t know
Boss, how much?” Boss just looked at Rosco and laughed. It would be so easy to
rip him off this time.
“Rosco, it won’t make us much, but it’s still a great way to make
money,” Boss said, flat out lying though his teeth. “But you will be gettin’
your normal 50% of 50% of 50%.
“But Boss, who are we going to pin it on?”
“Hmm, I haven’t thought about that yet, how ‘bout them Duke boys!”
There was a knock on the door as Boss finished his statement. “Rosco, get that
will ya?” He walked over and opened the door, only to see Mr. Cranston there.
He was there to see Boss Hogg with his mortgage payment.
“Hello Rosco, JD,” Mr. Cranston said before presenting the money.
“Jarick, I thought you said you wouldn’t be able to come up ‘cause
caring for your sheep was taking a lot longer due to your wrist, and you would
send someone else up.” Boss said to the elderly man.
“I was able to take some time off because I have someone coming over
to help me later on. All I had to do was let the little lambs out of the pen
and into the pasture with their mamas. Hilery is going to be up to help later
when she has done her homework. I gave her a job helping out.” The only thing
Mr. Cranston hadn’t known was that Hilery was already out of school. Many
people didn’t know when the senior graduation was.
“Ooo that’s so nice of you, keeps the girl busy and not startin’
fights that I’m called to break up,” Rosco said happily, not realizing what was
running through Boss’s head.
“Well, I better get going. Bye JD, Rosco.”
“Bye,” both of them said at the same time. Boss walked up and shut
the door in a hurry as soon as Mr. Cranston was out of sight.
“Rosco! I just had a wonderful idea! Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“Are you kidding of course... I don’t know Boss, what are you thinking?”
“We pin the whole operation on the Davenport gal!”
“Ooo jit! Boss, that sounds perfect!! Then I don’t have to go
around cleaning up her messes anymore when she starts trouble!”
“And I don’t have to pay repair bills when she tears up someplace I
own! And no more money givin’ to the school for repairs either!” Boss started
to dance around joyously, as did Rosco. Hilery Ann Davenport out of their hair;
it sounded like it would be too good to be true. The girl was crazier than
Cooter for crying out loud!
