Dukes in Canada, pt. 9

Luke came back from the hospital two weeks after Bo moved into the physical
therapy center. He would be surprised greatly. Bo was in the bathroom
cleaning it when Luke arrived. Bo loved to keep busy. He didn’t want to stop
living his life.

“We changed your room Larry,” The nurse stated.

“Thank you ma’am, I hated my roommate. He snored and talked in his sleep.
Not to mention his over enthusiasm. I can’t stand it, makes me want to die,”
Luke answered back.

“I’m sure you’ll like this roommate. He’s just your type, I promise.”

“Yeah, well I thought you said I’d have my own room.”

“I told you that would be the case if we didn’t get anymore patients. And
guess what happened, a new one arrived.”

Luke snarled at the lady. He just wanted her to leave. Luke didn’t like
company much. Even the sight of Jud troubled him. Luke figured that neither
he nor anyone else should have to suffer with hearing his grieving heart
cry.

As promised, the Dukes were relocated to Calgary or better known as cow
town. They had new names and everything. They wanted to keep their names at
least with the first letter so if Bo were to wake up he wouldn’t be so
confused.

Bo’s name was now known as Barry. Luke picked it for him. He said he had to
remain a country boy, it was in his blood. Jud’s name was now Jared. And
Luke was known as Larry. If you hear those names don’t get confused like I
did.

Luke was sent to a place where he had constant physical therapy. It was a
live–in deal. Bo would come along too…if he woke up. Luke didn’t think he
would. He was in a hole of deep depression. Sure of many things, one of
which was never walking again.

Luke slipped into a never ending depression that seemed to eat away at his
heart. Jud prayed for a miracle. That Bo would wake and get Luke out of this
rut. Or maybe that Luke would just try. Try to live… try to do things on his
own. It got so bad that he had to have a tube placed in his nose to make
sure he’d eat.

The Ransom: Chapter 10

by: Kristy Duke

I stare numbly up at the bright lights that shine down from the old ceiling while I vaguely hear the irregular beeping of the monitors that sit a foot or two from my head. Questions continue to run rapidly through my throbbing head as of how I had ended up at Tri-County and in so much pain. I sigh heavily only to enforce a fiery wave of pain through my lungs as I silently recall what Dr. Sanchez had said, I was found beaten in my garage. But by whom? And why? I vaguely recall the argument with Hogg over Rosco’s patrol car and rising the rent upon my garage, but Hogg wouldn’t have me beaten to death over the price of repair. Neither would his dim-witted sheriff. Fear and panic continue to swirl thickly through me as I once again am lost in thought of what all this means, of someone trying to kill me, and almost succeeding. Chills harshly rushes across my numb and pain covered body as Sanchez’s voice once again speaks up within me as he explained how close I had came to my own death. Would have if it weren’t for a lady named Kristy who found me in time and had performed CPR while her brother went for help. Only to force the questions to reappear within me of why I am here to begin with.

Abruptly my questions and thoughts are interrupted as the latch softly makes a clicking noise from the white painted door to grab my attention and I tiredly turn my head to look. After a brief moment, two tall and serious looking men walk in wearing dark pants and a dark blue windbreaker. Their body language and look cries loudly of authority, power, and of some sort of police agency. “Cooter,” the dark blond haired man finally speaks as he walks up to my bed while his hand goes inside his windbreaker and pulls out a black wallet. He slowly opens it and holds it out to me while he continues, “I’m Sergeant FBI Agent Frank Mills. There’s,” he points to the younger of the two with dark hair and dark eyes, “is my partner, Agent Treyton Mueller.”

I slowly nod only to reinforce the throbbing pain as I slowly hand his badge and ID back to him while I force a smile as I fight back the tears that begin to swell in my eyes. Tears of pain that continues to build within me. “I didn’t do anything. Promise,” I force another smile as I cautiously look from Mills to Mueller who stands at the end of the bed, staring at me with his shadowed dark eyes.

Bo and Luke were placed in different units of the hospital. Only family and
close friends were allowed to see Bo. He was so bad that they had to put him
in the surgical intensive care unit or SICU. Jud stayed with Bo while Cooter
stayed with Luke.

Luke was bad but not as bad. He was placed in the SU or surgical unit. Thank
goodness Luke wasn’t shot in the head. This gave doctors hope for the young
lad. But Luke had quite the broken arm. It was a miracle that the boys
lasted that long.

“Luke, if you open your eyes I’ll hire someone to cook for you,” Cooter
tried. He really wanted Luke to wake up. I’ll even pretend to like your
cooking.”

Two months later…
Bo and Jud were working in the fields once again. Luke made sandwiches for
them and brought them out. “You’re supposed to be relaxing at home there
cousin,” Jud scolded.

“Well certain things have caused me to want to visit,” Bo replied.

“Like what?”

“Try everlasting boredom. That’s why I’m working in the fields.”

“That’ll kill anyone.”

“Cut the act, I knew Bo being in bed wouldn’t last,” Luke stated. Both
sighed with relief knowing how concerned Luke had been for Bo. He was so
upset about the whole ordeal still though it had been a few months.

“Luke we need supplies, you want to go down to Mr. Rhuebottom’s with me?” Bo
asked.

“Yeah, I’d love to. Jud, can you keep watering? It has been a while since Bo
could actually go somewhere,” Luke stated. Jud nodded.

“Then I’ll drive?”

“Not as fast though.”

“Why not?”
