The Man He Used to Be, ch. 13

Daisy ran into the waiting room where Bo was anxiously pacing the floor. Crying heavily, she threw herself into her cousin’s arms. Jesse followed close behind, his own eyes rimmed with red and wet with tears.

“Shhh………it’s okay.” Bo said soothingly, trying to smile encouragingly through his own tears. “It’s okay. The doctors got his heart going again just after I called y’all. Luke’s not dead, not yet anyway.”

“Thank the lord.” Jesse said, slumping down in a chair. “Did the doctor say anything else?”

“Just the same ole sh……” Bo caught himself before he said what he had started to say “uh….stuff. That he can’t make any guarantees and that if it happens again, he don’t think they’ll be able to get him back.” Bo helped Daisy to sit down next to Jessie on the battered plastic sofa. They were all stressed out and worried out of their minds. But as long as Luke was alive, they would continue their lonely vigil and keep on praying.

Daisy waited in the waiting room still too upset to see Luke in the intensive care unit, while Bo and Jesse went back to see Luke. Because of the recent developments, the doctor had bent his own rules and allowed both of them to go in at the same time.

Luke was deathly pale and showed no response when Jesse took his hand. “Come on, boy…” he said quietly “You gotta fight and keep fighting so you can come back home where you belong.”

“You can’t give up, cuz.” Bo said “Not now…..not yet.”

Three exhausted Dukes sat on the uncomfortable plastic chairs in the hospital waiting room. They had been waiting for over an hour to find out if Luke was alive or dead. Finally, the doctor came through the swinging doors and ushered the family into his office. Closing the door, he sat down at the desk facing them and addressed Jesse somberly, “Mr. Duke, your nephew is still alive but he’s having trouble breathing and his heartbeat is very irregular. We have two choices, we can put him on life support and hope that keeps him alive until his body gets stronger or we can do nothing and let nature take it’s course.”

“Then you gotta put ‘em on them machines.” Bo said in a broken voice, tears welling in his eyes. “Uncle Jesse, you can’t just let Luke die.” His eyes pleaded with his uncle to make the decision.

“Now Bo, settle down.” Jesse said absently. He looked at the doctor closely and asked the question he needed to know the answer to before he made any decision “If I tell you to put him on the machines and he makes it, will he be the same Luke he was before?”

“Mr Duke, I can’t guarantee anything. His injuries are extensive and there may be some brain damage from the near drowning. We have no idea how long his brain was without oxygen before you got him breathing again.”

“Then you put him on those machines” Jesse said firmly “Because my boy ain’t gonna die if I can help it.”

“Can we see him?” Daisy asked, tears running down her face.

CHAPTER TWO

On the road, Bo gripped the gearshift, wanting so badly to push the car to its maximum limits. It was a dream car to drive. He knew he would have to talk Caitlin into letting him test-drive it at one of the local racetracks. Caitlin sat beside him looking over her shoulder every few seconds. She bit her lip nervously hoping that Bo wouldn’t wonder what was wrong. She tried to sit back and enjoy the beautiful countryside with its trees and grassy fields. She tried to learn the twists and turns of the road so that she could find her way around later. Bo noticed the shyness that had come over his pretty companion. He wanted her to relax, thinking that she was nervous about letting him drive her car. He inquired in a friendly tone, “Caitlin, where do you call home?”

Caitlin answered curtly yet casually, as pictures of her parents and her old life flashed through her brain,” New York.”

Bo teased, “Oh, so you’re one of those big city girls – Huh?”

Caitlin let out a small smile, “Yeah, I guess you might say that.” She wanted to tell him about her family’s estate in the country but that would be giving out too much information. Her intuition told her she could trust in the man behind the blue eyes, but her experience and thoughts of the men in the Cadillac screamed against it in her brain. She decided it was time to get him off the subject and knew that most men liked to talk about one other thing. She asked curiously, “Have you lived in Hazzard all your life? Do you have other family here besides…did you say Luke was your cousin?”

Bo smiled proudly. He was very glad to begin giving her his life story; to tell her all about his adventures in Hazzard County. Caitlin began to relax with each story. Each detail bringing laughter which kept her encouraging him to tell more.

Bo glanced up anxiously each time the door to the emergency room opened but it was always a doctor for somebody else, not the Dukes. It was almost four hours before a doctor finally came out to where the Dukes were gathered. Shelby and Enos were still there too, just as anxious as the Duke family to find out how Luke was.

“Are you Mr Duke?” the doctor asked Jesse

“Yes, sir. And this is my nephew, Bo and my niece, Daisy. How’s Luke?”

“I’m Dr Barnes. Why don’t we step into my office so we can talk privately.”

Jesse felt his heart jump into his throat. It was never a good sign when a doctor wanted to talk to you privately.

“Uncle Jesse,” Daisy cried, grabbing her Uncle’s arm fearfully.

“Now Daisy, I’m sure it’s gonna be okay.” He patted her hand reassuringly “Let me talk to the doctor here so I can find out how Luke is.” He glanced at Bo, who immediately took Daisy in his arms, comforting her. Bo’s own fear for his cousin showed clearly in his eyes.

Jesse followed the doctor into a nearby office. Closing the door, the doctor motioned for Jesse to sit down in one of the two chairs facing the desk. Jesse sank into the chair, suddenly feeling old and tired. He’d spent more then his share of time in hospital waiting rooms because one of the boys was always getting hurt, but neither one of them had ever been hurt this badly before.

“How’s Luke?” he asked “How’s my boy?”

Rainbow Canyon was full of hidden valleys and hollers and unless you knew your way around, it was easy to get lost in there. They drove deep into the Canyon towards the location Pete had given them. It took some doing to get there since there was no road leading to the barn anymore but finally the rundown old building came into view. Not wanting to alert anyone who might there besides Luke, they parked the vehicles a short distance from barn. As they all climbed out and gathered together to discuss their next move, Daisy suddenly grabbed her Uncle’s arm and said in a loud whisper “Uncle Jesse, look!” She pointed towards a large lake not far from the barn. “Down there on the dock!”

Alerted by Daisy’s sharp eyes, everyone turned their attention towards the lake instead of the barn. They could see two men and a woman standing on the old deck at the edge of the lake. There was a third form crumbled on the deck in front of one of the men. They could only assume that the body on the ground was Luke. Slowly, the group started to edge their way closer to the deck.

“You two stay here with Jesse.” Bo said, glancing at Shelby and Daisy. They were within a hundred yards of the trio on the deck and, so far, luck was with them. They hadn’t been noticed. Jesse nodded, putting an arm around each of the girls. Bo, Roscoe and Enos slowly crept closer to the deck.

One of the men reached down and grabbed Luke, who was either dead or unconscious, Bo couldn’t tell which. He lifted Luke’s body into an upright position just as Roscoe announced their presence by yelling “Freeze! Just Freeze! You’re all under arrest!”
