Dukes in Canada, pt. 8

by: Essy Jane

As promised, the Dukes were relocated to Calgary or better known as cow
town. They had new names and everything. They wanted to keep their names at
least with the first letter so if Bo were to wake up he wouldn’t be so
confused.

Bo’s name was now known as Barry. Luke picked it for him. He said he had to
remain a country boy, it was in his blood. Jud’s name was now Jared. And
Luke was known as Larry. If you hear those names don’t get confused like I
did.

Luke was sent to a place where he had constant physical therapy. It was a
live–in deal. Bo would come along too…if he woke up. Luke didn’t think he
would. He was in a hole of deep depression. Sure of many things, one of
which was never walking again.

Luke slipped into a never ending depression that seemed to eat away at his
heart. Jud prayed for a miracle. That Bo would wake and get Luke out of this
rut. Or maybe that Luke would just try. Try to live… try to do things on his
own. It got so bad that he had to have a tube placed in his nose to make
sure he’d eat.

Six months went by and Bo still hadn’t woken up. He was just too stubborn or
maybe he wasn’t ready. But one foggy morning as a nurse sat by his side, Bo
moved his head. As she spoke sweet words to him, once again he moved his
head. The nurse’s name is Tara. She was in love with him from the minute she
laid eyes on him.

“Where am I?” Bo questioned.

“Well you’re in a hospital, the General hospital,” Tara replied.

“You mean tri-county hospital?”

“No, you don’t live in a county Barry, you live in a town.”

“A town? I live in Hazzard.”

“Sorry sweetie, I don’t know where that is.”

“You’ve got to you’re here!”

“Listen Barry…”

“My name ain’t Barry, ma’am.”

“Yes it is Barry. Boy, you must’ve had a bigger blow to the head than I
thought. Your coma couldn’t have lasted longer than it did. Sometimes people
don’t wake up when they’re out that long. You never know.”

“So I’m Barry?”

“Yeah, you are.”

“And I have lived in…”

“Canada since you were a child. You lived in Saskatchewan with your Uncle.”

“That can’t be right! I live in a place where I’m always chased by the law.
They aren’t that smart. You have to believe me.”

“You could’ve been dreaming all of that. You know sometimes our dreams seem
realer than life. I can understand how you could get those two mixed up.”

“It has to be real.”

“I’m going to call your cousin. He may be able to answer more of your
questions.”

“Luke?”

“No, Jared.”

“I think you mean Jud. I have no cousin Jared. I have cousins named Vance
and Coy but I don’t see them much.”

“You do have a cousin named Jared.”

Bo looked at her unusually. He didn’t understand what had been going on. It
was like his whole reality had become a dream. But why did he not remember
anything? Why was it so hard to understand?
Two hours later…

Jud walked into the coma center with his eyes full of purpose. He wanted to
see Bo and tell him about all that had happened. He hoped the nurse didn’t
say too much to him. They had their history re-written for the time being.
He knew Bo would have troubles even thinking he was from a different
country. But he could play a good shuck and jive.

The nurse explained about his loss of memory.

Jud just shrugged it off. “He’ll remember when he talks to me a while,” Jud
told the nurse. She nodded. Jud walked in the room. As he did, Bo’s face lit
up. As the nurse left, Jud finally began to talk. “Don’t say anything, just
listen. You are now known as Barry Daley. You were born in wheat farming
stable. Your mama died just last year from a stroke. You moved in with your
cousins, me and my brother, Luke… I mean Larry. My name is Jared.”

“And I’m Barry. What’d we do, go join the drama club?” Bo questioned.

“Nope, just witness protection.”

“When did all this happen? Last thing I remember was we were beating up some
bank robbers and I pulled off a…mask. They were our friends. He whispered
something to me before Kevin went off yellin’.”

“Like what?”

“He told me he didn’t want to rob banks anymore and that it was impossible
to keep it silent. He said that he missed being a normal guy and that he
could never shoot anybody.”

“He shot Larry.”

“What?! Is he okay?”

“Kind of, Barry.”

“What do you mean kinda?”

“Well he’ll be okay if he can just get off his duff.”

“There’s something wrong with him I knew it. I have feelings when something
occurs with him. He’s sick, down in the dumps. I was wondering what is going
on.”

“You can get him out of it, can’t you? I mean you have to try. Larry is just
not who he used to be and…well I don’t know how to take care of it. You know
him better.”

“You’ll know, just not now. We’ve been together since the beginning of time.
I mean we’re more like brothers than some siblings really are.”

“I can understand that. You both get those feelings when the other’s in
trouble. I’ve noticed that a lot.” Bo sat up and tried to get out of bed. He
couldn’t seem to move. He tried again and again but there was no movement.

“I seem to be stiff Ju…I mean Jared.”

“Barry you’re paralyzed from the waist down, I just forgot to tell you.
Larry has the same trouble. That’s why he’s so upset. And also the fact that
you are in here is killing him. He’s so upset all the time.”

Bo slammed his hand on the bed. He was extremely upset. Now when Bo’s upset
you know it. He doesn’t hold many things back. Luke on the other hand holds
it back more than anything. That’s why he has so many problems.

“Well I guess we’ll have to deal with it, one step at a time.”
